Here on the West Coast, we have not had a lot of rainfall. The land is quite dry and water conservation is a topic of discussion throughout the city. So, I was delighted when Charles III told us that his class is learning about propagating succulents.
I remember my grandmother growing what she called “Hens and chicks.” Sometimes, she would refer to the smaller ones as “bitties.” Being a young, country girl, I thought she was literally speaking about chickens. Well, you know what they say, “you live and you learn.”
Over the weekend, I went to my local nursery to pick up a few supplies to plant my Spring garden. I decided to start a succulent container garden. Not only are these amazing plants drought-tolerant, there are so many beautiful varieties. I found myself most drawn to the rosette-shaped echeverias.
For planting, I used a combination of Potting Soil and Cactus Mix. Before filling the planter,
I arranged the succulents in their original containers to get an idea of where I would place each one. Then, Charles tilled the soil while Julian looked on with his bubble wand in hand.
And here’s the final product. We adoringly named it “The Succulent Family”.
So, back to the bubbles! I get such a kick out of this picture. It reminds of the cowboy showdowns in the old Western movies. Julian is just about to draw his bubble wand.
I wonder what he was thinking … Perhaps, he was thinking, “Go ahead, make my day!”
Here is the scene shortly after that intense moment. They had a blast!
Great!
